INTRODUCTION

Val Thorens has just been awarded ‘The Best Ski Resort in the World’ for the third time in four years and won the coveted ‘Best French ski resort’ beating many of the more traditionally popular ski resorts. Val Thorens is proud to be a leading French and International ski resort.

Val Thorens is the highest resort in Europe (2300m) offering brilliant quality skiing all season long
It is part of the enormous 3Vallees – skiers can ski from Val Thorens, visit Orelle; pop down into Les Menuires, head via Meribel onto Courchevel or La Tania – your options are endless as are your options for good skiing lunch – there’s too much choice in this large ski area and new high end restaurants are opening all the time making Val Thorens a must visit destination and has 268 ski lifts.

There is excellent choice for intermediate skiers and children will relish the amount of choice on offer and love the central magic carpet area (our little ski tester, aged 5, loved it!) Older children also will have huge fun on the large sledging piste open from January – March – it is over 10km long!

New for 2016/17 – Wifi throughout the resort and a new digital innovation – SkiFlux – which will provide skier’s with realtime information on how busy the slopes are.

THE RESORT

The town isn’t pretty, but it’s development in recent years is far more sympathetic to the surroundings, so yes it’s not a pretty high street to wander around – however there is a good indoor shopping mall (helpful for snowy days) with other shops and restaurants scattered around the main hub. Val Thorens has some good nightlife, with an underground club – so it’s not just for families. La Folie Douce has now opened here – perfect for apres ski.

Accommodation throughout the town is constantly raising it’s game and there are a huge number of 4* and 5* hotels in Val Thorens and more planned soon.

SKIING

As the resort is ski in/ski out and Hotel Altapura is right beside the ‘Plein Sud’ piste (a blue) leading you down to the beginner ski area (magic carpets galore) or continue down to the multitude of lifts for you to begin your day exploring the vast area. Feel free to potter around the resort or head over to Meribel for lunch – the world is your oyster here.

For families the ski area is dusted with plenty of blue run’s and interspersed with challenging run’s for testing the limits but essentially the skiing is varied and excellent for learner’s.
The fun slope and junior area is an innovative idea and gives the juniors a space to call their own to practice rail slides, jumps and just plain ‘neat turns’.

FOR THE KIDS

There is so much to do – each week events are laid on at the tourist office for free from 3pm – 5pm. In the sports centre children can enjoy trampolining, bouncy castles, swimming, table tennis. Outdoors you can enjoy ski doo-ing, dog sledding, sledging on the longes sledging slope in Euope, zip wire (for skiers only).
